Maybe it's better if you sleep at your place tonight.

I rolled over, not ready to get up, and reached over to pull Kat closer. Instead of her warmth, my arm wrapped around an ice cold pillow in an empty bed. Regret slammed into me when I realized she wasn't there. Flopping onto my back, I chided myself for my behavior yesterday. Zandia knew all the right buttons to set off my anger. I'd said several rude things that when heard out of context, just made me sound like an asshole.

Using my shame as motivation, I pushed myself to get out of bed and find my mate to apologize. We'd slept fully clothed since she was still frustrated at me, so I didn't bother to change. Padding through her house, I didn't feel her presence. Our bond was stronger from the first mating, so I could feel she wasn't in or around the house. Snatching my phone off the charger, I called her. A muffled ringtone came from her studio.

"Shit."

She'd left her phone, probably on purpose. My beast forced its way to the surface, demanding we find our mate to ensure her safety, but I didn't know enough about her to have the faintest idea of where she would go. I walked around her kitchen, trying to organize my thoughts while shoving my beast back. Burning her house down would be the worst thing I could do right now.

"I could make her breakfast… no, because I don't know how long she will be gone, or if she's already eaten. I'll wait until she returns for that."

Sitting down at my temporary work station, I tapped my fingers on the desk, debating if I could even attempt to focus on work. My beast protested, threatening to take full control.

"Knock that shit off. It's impossible for a giant red and orange bird to fly around without being noticed and probably hunted down in an area this populated. Though, that would probably make Zandia's week."

Even my beast sulked as he tried to come up with a better option. I eventually convinced us that trusting her would be the best option since she was less than pleased with us as it was. Since the phoenix side of me had awakened, he'd also lost his temper with Zandia's veiled threats.

With my mind made up, I forced myself to open my tablet and read through the day's reports, but none of the words made sense. Every sound I heard outside caused my beast to lunge to the surface. After the fifth time he'd reared his bossy head, I was on the verge of losing control. Once she got home, I wasn't letting her out of my sight until the mating ceremony was complete. I couldn't handle this shit.

An eternity passed before the metallic sound of the doorknob turning let me know she was home. Before she could open the door, I was in the doorway, ready to swoop her into my arms, until I saw her expression.

"Are you ready to tell me what happened yesterday?" Kat crossed her arms as she stared me down.
